Valarie Phillips

Valarie Phillips started her career as an assistant at Paradigm and continued on to become an agent in the MP Literary and TV Departments. She has shepherded the careers of Anthony Jaswinski, who wrote the summer of 2016’s huge financial winner for Sony, “The Shallows,” and has recently sold and set up multiple spec scripts at studios in both film and TV, Eric Tuchman who is the Executive Producer of “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu, Chuck Leavitt whose credits include: “In the Heart of the Sea,” “Blood Diamond” and “The Express,” TV-turned-film writer Brenda Hsueh, who is currently writing an animated film for Pixar and director Peter Sohn, and playwright/screenwriter David Henry Hwang, who is currently writing “Hunchback” for Disney and Mandeville Productions.

Valarie has been advocating for more women in the film and TV space and is thrilled
about the work she and her colleagues have been doing for Nzingha Stewart, who is
one of the most sought after female directors working in TV right now. Nzingha just
completed the Netflix film, “Tall Girl,” and will be starting production soon on the Misty
Copeland film, “Life in Motion,” for New Line. Valarie also works with director Suzi
Yoonessi whose film, “Unlovable,” won the Special Jury Prize for Directing at South
by Southwest, Ami Mann whose credits include “Jackie & Ryan” and “Texas Killing Fields,” Josephine Decker who directed “Madeline’s Madeline” and “Shirley,” which is currently in post-production, and Chinonye Chukwu whose film, “Clemency,” won the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize in Drama.

A fourth generation Californian, Valarie graduated from UC Santa Barbara. She lives in
Toluca Lake with her husband, a non-pro, their two daughters, and Portuguese Water
Dog.
